PRP Therapy Helps Tiger Woods Recover

In December of 2008, Tiger Woods received platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to help him recover from his knee surgery. The following year was one of the best years of his entire golfing career. PRP therapy has proven to assist with injury recovery for Tiger Woods and many other professional athletes.

After his PRP therapy for his LCL and achilles tendon, 2009 became one of the best years in his career. He made the cut for 16 out of 17 competitions and won 6 awards.

Tiger Woods’ Injuries and ComebackTiger Woods, PRP Therapy

According to Woods, he injured his left knee sometime in 2007 while running near his home. He suffered from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). In April of 2008, he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and made a brief return to win the U.S. Open. Woods finally had reconstructive surgery on his damaged ACL which took him out for the rest of the 2008 season. According to Woods, his lateral collateral ligament (LCL) was not reacting properly to the reconstructive surgery and he opted for PRP therapy. Shortly after, Woods tore his achilles tendon in his right leg and once again chose PRP therapy to accelerate his recovery.

PRP Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma is an autologous concentrated preparation of platelets in a small volume of plasma. Platelets naturally compose about 10% of our blood, and in PRP they compose about 90%. Platelets are a natural source of numerous growth factors, thus PRP offers a promising approach to tissue regeneration. The body uses platelets to heal itself, so PRP simply speeds the process.

PRP therapy is when blood is taken from the patient and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red and white blood cells. The PRP is then injected into the problem area of the patient to speed recovery. PRP injections are said to improve conditions by 80% or more¹.
